This photo released Tuesday March 7, 2006 by the IFREMER (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) shows a new crustacean, called 'Kiwi hirsuta'.

This crustacean resembles a lobster and is covered by hair-like strands.  Because of it's appearance it has been nicknamed the "Yeti Lobster" or "Yeti Crab".

It is so distinct from other species that scientists have created a new family and genus for it.

Kiwa hirsuta was found in hydrothermal vents in waters 7,540 feet deep, 900 miles sound of Easter Island in 2005.

It is white and nearly 6 inches long.  It is also blind.

The family is named Kiwaida, from Kiwa, the goddess of crustaceans in Polynesian mythology.
